San Diego County Fair 2009: Fair Fare II

The last time I was at the fair was when it was still called the Del Mar Fair. And that was years ago. Last Tuesday, after my lunch with my girlfriends, I stopped by to pick up our fair passes. It was a crowded Tuesday because it was the only day when fair tickets were $2 instead of $13. I got our season passes, I walked in and went straight to the food court. Or the food aisles. Whatever it was called, I let my nose lead the way.
I passed by the yogurt and ice cream stands but my nose was dragging me towards the sweet smell of…..frying oil!! Yes, after snapping pictures of the food stands, glancing and sniffing the grilled corn-on-the-cob and ogling Cinnabons with sticky, gooey icing, I finally got to Chicken Charlie’s—-home of the TOTALLY FRIED anything! Although Chicken Charlie’s chicken kabobs looked healthy and inviting  on the grill, the real attraction is the “have to try” selection of deep fried food.
First on my list, the Fried Frog Legs with Fries. Harmless enough and as they always say…”it tastes just like chicken!”
After a few minutes and no obvious adverse effects, I bravely tried the DEEP FRIED AVOCADO with PESTO SAUCE. You can have it with ranch sauce if you want and I must admit, it wasn’t so bad. You can actually taste the avocado!
One of the most touted food at this year’s fair, the Zucchini Weenie on a Stick was next on my list. Looking like a regular corndog, a quick bite (or slice) reveals a crunchy, almost raw zucchini and a semi-cooked hotdog. Hmmmm…I need a moment to digest this one.
In the meantime, here’s the rest of DEEP FRIED specials.:
TOTALLY FRIED OREOS
TOTALLY FRIED TWINKIES
KOOKIE COOKIE CHICKEN SANDWICH – battered chicken meat slathered with strawberry jam and sandwiched between two crunchy cookies!
KRISPY KREME CHICKEN SANDWICH – same as the cookie sandwich except the “buns” are KRISPY KREME doughnuts.
If you are not into fried sweets, check out my post and photos of the grilled dishes available at the fair.
The fair is open until July 5 so watch out for more posts on “gotta-eat” food!

All that fried food!! The one thing that makes the fair worth going too. I haven’t tried the twinkie yet, but I’ve had the oreo. It amazing all the things people can fry up.
i thought i woudl gag! the twinkie is enough to induce a diabetic seizure!!LOL…i know…i can’t wait to see what they will fry next year!
